Caramelized Apple Tart with Spiced Crust

Ingredients:

For the crust:
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1 large egg yolk
- 2 tablespoons ice water

- 4 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Cooking Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a food processor, combine the flour, sugar, cinnamon, ginger, and salt for the crust. Add the cold cubed butter and pulse until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and ice water. Gradually add this mixture to the dough while pulsing until the dough comes together.
- Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and shape it into a disk. Wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- Meanwhile, in a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt. Cook for about 10 minutes, or until the apples are soft and caramelized.
- Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface and transfer it to a tart pan. Press the dough into the pan and trim any excess.
- Arrange the caramelized apples evenly over the crust.
- Bake the tart in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
- Allow the tart to cool slightly before serving. Serve with a dollop of whipped cream, if desired.
