In a microwave-safe mug (10–12 oz), whisk the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined — good mixing avoids lumps, dear.
Add the milk, oil (or melted butter), and vanilla. Stir until you have a smooth batter. Fold in the chocolate chips if using; they make lovely pockets of melted chocolate.
Tap the mug gently on the counter to settle the batter and release any air bubbles.
Microwave on high for 60–90 seconds. Start checking at 60 seconds: the cake should be set on top but still springy — don’t overcook or it will dry out. Microwaves vary, so adjust time as needed.
Let the mug cake rest 1 minute (it finishes cooking and cools a touch). Top with ice cream or whipped cream if you like — that contrast is heavenly.
