There's something truly divine about the rich, nutty flavor of brown butter, especially when it coats silky gnocchi. This dish is simple yet elegant, and the sage adds a lovely aroma.
Ingredients
- For the Gnocchi:
- 1 pound (about 450g) of store-bought potato gnocchi
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 6-8 fresh sage leaves
- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste
- Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for serving)
Instructions
-
Cook the Gnocchi:
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
- Add the gnocchi and cook according to the package instructions, typically 2-3 minutes until they float to the top. Once floating, allow them to cook for an additional 30 seconds.
- Drain the gnocchi and set aside.
-
Make the Brown Butter Sauce:
- In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
- Continue cooking the butter. It will foam and then turn to a golden brown color, emitting a nutty aroma (this takes about 3-5 minutes). Watch closely to prevent burning.
- Once the butter is golden brown, add the sage leaves. Cook for an additional minute until the sage becomes crispy.
-
Combine Gnocchi and Sauce:
- Gently add the cooked gnocchi to the skillet, tossing to coat them in the brown butter and sage mixture.
- Make sure to cook for a couple of minutes to thicken the sauce slightly and ensure the gnocchi are well-coated.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
-
Serve:
- Plate the gnocchi and sprinkle with grated Parmesan if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy the rich flavors!
