The California Roll is a sushi classic that combines the flavors of the sea with a delightful crunch. This recipe is perfect for beginners and will impress anyone at your table!
Ingredients
- 2 cups sushi rice
- 2 1/2 cups water
- 1/4 cup rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 sheets nori (seaweed)
- 1 ripe avocado, sliced into thin strips
- 1 cup imitation crab meat, shredded
- 1/2 cucumber, julienned
- Sesame seeds (for garnish)
- Soy sauce (for serving)
- Wasabi and pickled ginger (optional, for serving)
Cooking Instructions

Prepare the Sushi Rice:
- Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch.
- Combine the rinsed rice and water in a rice cooker or a pot and bring to a boil. If using a pot, cover, reduce heat, and simmer for 18-20 minutes until the water has been absorbed.
- Remove from heat and let it sit covered for about 10 minutes.

Season the Rice:
- In a small saucepan, combine the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Heat until dissolved.
- Transfer the cooked rice to a large bowl. While it's still warm, gently fold in the vinegar mixture with a wooden spoon or spatula. Allow it to cool to room temperature.

Make the Rolls:
- Place a bamboo sushi mat on a flat surface. Lay one sheet of nori, shiny side down, on the mat.
- Wet your hands to prevent sticking. Take about 1 cup of sushi rice and spread it evenly over the nori, leaving about 1 inch at the top edge.
- Lay a line of imitation crab, cucumber, and avocado along the bottom edge of the rice-covered nori.

Rolling the Sushi:
- Starting at the bottom, use the sushi mat to roll the nori away from you, pressing gently to create a tight roll. Use the mat to help shape and mold the roll.
- Once rolled, use a sharp knife to slice the roll into 6-8 pieces. Wipe the knife with a damp cloth between cuts for cleaner slices.

Serving:
- Arrange the sushi on a platter, sprinkle with sesame seeds, and serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger if desired.
