Ingredients:
- 8 ounces elbow macaroni
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk (plant-based or dairy)
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or your preferred cheese)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional toppings: breadcrumbs, chopped parsley
Instructions:
- Cook the elbow macaroni according to the package instructions, until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet or saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the flour to the melted butter and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes, until the mixture becomes smooth and golden.
- Gradually pour in the milk, whisking constantly to avoid any lumps.
- Continue cooking and whisking until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes.
- Reduce the heat to low and stir in the shredded cheese, allowing it to melt completely into the sauce.
- Add the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Taste and adjust the seasonings as needed.
- Once the cheese sauce is smooth and creamy, add the cooked macaroni to the skillet. Stir well to evenly coat the macaroni with the cheese sauce.
- Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, until the macaroni is heated through.
- Serve the creamy stovetop mac and cheese hot, garnished with breadcrumbs and chopped parsley if desired.
