Creamy Stovetop Mac and Cheese

Ingredients:
- 8 ounces elbow macaroni
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions:
- Cook the macaroni according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, until it forms a paste-like consistency.
- Gradually whisk in the milk, making sure to eliminate any lumps. Cook the mixture for 5 minutes, stirring constantly until it thickens.
- Reduce the heat to low. Add the shredded cheddar cheese, salt, garlic powder (if using), and black pepper to the saucepan. Stir until the cheese has melted and the sauce is smooth.
- Add the cooked macaroni to the sauce and stir until it is fully coated.
- Serve the stovetop mac and cheese immediately while it is warm and creamy.
