Flavored Syrup Challah

This fluffy and slightly sweet challah is enriched with eggs and uses flavored syrup (such as honey, maple, or a fruit syrup) instead of granulated sugar, making it a unique and delicious bread perfect for any occasion!
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for dusting)
- 1/4 cup flavored syrup (such as honey, maple syrup, or a fruit-infused syrup)
- 1 tablespoon instant yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup warm water (110°F/43°C)
- 2 large eggs (plus 1 egg for egg wash)
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil (or melted butter)
Cooking Instructions

Activate the Yeast:
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water and flavored syrup. Sprinkle the instant yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.

Mix the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, eggs, and vegetable oil.
- Begin mixing with a spatula or wooden spoon until a dough forms.

Knead the Dough:
- Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour as needed.

First Rise:
- Place the kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap or a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.

Shape the Challah:
- Once risen, punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide the dough into three equal pieces.
- Roll each piece into a long strand (about 12-14 inches) and braid them together to form the challah. Alternatively, you can shape the dough into a round loaf.

Second Rise:
- Place the braided challah on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.

Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Egg Wash and Bake:
- Beat the remaining egg with a splash of water. Brush the egg wash over the surface of the risen challah for a beautiful golden finish.
