Ingredients:
- 1 sheet puff pastry dough
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 4 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced into thin wedges
- 1/4 cup raisins
- 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
- 1 egg, beaten
- Powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sugar and cinnamon, stirring until dissolved. Add the sliced apples and cook for 5 minutes until the apples are slightly softer but not mushy. Add the raisins and walnuts and cook for 2 more minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool.
- Roll out the puff pastry dough, gently stretching it as you roll. Place the apple filling down the centre of the dough, leaving a couple of inches of dough on either side. Cut slits on either side of the filling diagonally.
- Brush the edges of the dough with the beaten egg. Fold the bottom and top edges of the dough inwards, then fold over the side edges to create a seal.
- Place the strudel on the baking sheet and brush more egg wash over the top.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Once done, remove from the oven and allow it to cool completely. Dust with powdered sugar and serve.
Flavor profile: This apple strudel is a classic dessert featuring a crispy and flaky puff pastry crust filled with cinnamon-sugar-spiced apples, raisins, and walnuts. The combination of sweet and nutty flavors from the filling pairs perfectly with the buttery and flaky pastry crust.
