As a lovely twist on the traditional turkey, this recipe combines the warmth of Cajun spices with the zing of horseradish, making for a moist and flavorful main dish that will leave everyone asking for seconds.
Ingredients
- 1 whole turkey (12-14 lbs, thawed if frozen)
- 1 cup butter (2 sticks), softened
- 1/4 cup horseradish sauce
- 2 tablespoons Creole seasoning
- 1 tablespoon seasoned salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- Fresh herbs (like thyme, rosemary, or parsley) for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C).
- In a mixing bowl, combine the softened butter, horseradish sauce, Creole seasoning, seasoned salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.
- Pat the turkey dry with paper towels, both inside and out.
- Carefully loosen the skin over the turkey breast by gently sliding your fingers underneath. Be careful not to tear it.
- Spread about half of the Cajun horseradish butter mixture directly under the skin and over the breast meat, smoothing it out as best as you can.
- Rub the remaining butter mixture all over the outside of the turkey, making sure to coat it nicely.
- Place the turkey breast-side up on a roasting rack in a roasting pan. Tuck the wing tips under the bird and tie the legs together with kitchen twine.
- Roast the turkey in the preheated oven, basting every 30-40 minutes with the pan drippings until it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (75°C) when checked at the thickest part of the thigh (approximately 3-4 hours, depending on the size).
- Once fully cooked, remove the turkey from the oven and let it rest for 20-30 minutes before carving. This allows the juices to redistribute for a tender, juicy turkey.
- Garnish with fresh herbs if desired, and serve with your favorite sides.
Flavor Profile
