Ingredients:
- 4 medium-sized yams
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- Optional toppings: chopped pecans or marshmallows
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
- Peel the yams and cut them into 1/4-inch thick rounds or cubes, whichever you prefer. Place the yams in a large pot and cover them with water. Bring the water to a boil and cook the yams for about 10 minutes, until they are slightly softened. Drain the water and set the yams aside.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the brown sugar, maple syrup, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg. Stir until the mixture is well combined and the sugar is dissolved. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Place the cooked yams in the prepared baking dish and pour the brown sugar mixture over them, making sure to evenly coat each piece.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the yams are tender and the glaze is thickened and bubbly.
- Optional step: If you'd like some extra crunch, sprinkle chopped pecans over the yams during the last 10 minutes of baking, or cover the top with marshmallows for a gooey, sweet finish.
- Let the candied yams cool for a few minutes before serving. Spoon some of the glaze from the baking dish over each serving for maximum flavor.
This recipe will give you tender and caramelized yams with a delightful brown sugar and cinnamon glaze. The addition of maple syrup and nutmeg adds a rich and warm depth of flavor. Feel free to add some chopped pecans or marshmallows as optional toppings for an extra special touch. Enjoy your delicious Cinnamon-Brown Sugar Glazed Candied Yams!
