Creamy Stovetop Mac and Cheese

Ingredients:
- 8 ounces elbow macaroni
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Optional: diced cooked bacon, chopped green onions, or sliced jalapenos for topping
Instructions:
- Cook the elbow macaroni according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk constantly for 1-2 minutes until the mixture turns slightly golden.
- Slowly pour in the milk while continuing to whisk. Cook for a few minutes until the mixture thickens and starts bubbling.
- Reduce the heat to low and gradually add the shredded cheddar cheese to the saucepan, stirring constantly until melted and smooth.

- Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until each noodle is evenly coated.
- Continue to cook on low heat for an additional 2-3 minutes until the mac and cheese is heated through.
- Serve hot and, if desired, top with diced cooked bacon, chopped green onions, or sliced jalapenos for an extra kick.
