Backstory: This gluten-free version of crispy fried tilapia showcases the crunchiness of cornmeal and the savory note of Maggi sauce, creating a delightful dish that is suitable for everyone!
Ingredients:
- 2 tilapia fillets
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup buttermilk or regular milk (or a non-dairy milk if needed)
- Vegetable oil, for frying
For the Maggi Sauce:
- 2 tablespoons Maggi seasoning
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for a gluten-free option)
- 1 teaspoon honey or sugar (adjust for sweetness)
- 1 teaspoon rice vinegar (or lemon juice)
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil (optional for added flavor)
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic (optional)
- 1-2 teaspoons water (if needed to thin out)
Cooking Instructions:
-
Prepare the Maggi Sauce: In a small bowl, mix together the Maggi seasoning, soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, and sesame oil. If using, add minced garlic for an extra flavor punch. Adjust the consistency with water as needed and set aside.
-
Marinate the Fish: Season the tilapia fillets with salt and pepper, and allow them to rest for about 10 minutes to absorb the flavors.
-
Prepare the Coating: In one bowl, beat the egg and mix in the buttermilk. In another bowl, combine the cornmeal, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
-
Coat the Fish: Dip each fillet into the egg mixture, making sure any excess drips off, then coat thoroughly with the cornmeal mixture, pressing gently to ensure it sticks well.
-
Heat the Oil: In a frying pan or skillet, heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches about 350°F (175°C).
-
Fry the Fish: Carefully place the coated tilapia fillets into the hot oil. Fry each side for approximately 3-4 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Fry in batches if needed to avoid overcrowding the pan.
-
Drizzle the Sauce: Once cooked, transfer the tilapia fillets to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil. Drizzle the prepared Maggi sauce over the crispy fillets right before serving.
