Tourtière is a beloved dish in Quebec, often served during the holidays and special occasions. The savory aroma of spiced meat and onions will fill your kitchen and bring warmth to the table.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground pork
- 1 lb ground beef
- 2 large onions, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon dried sage
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground allspice
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- 2 pie crusts (store-bought or homemade)
Cooking Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add a drizzle of oil and sauté the onions until they are soft and translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
- Add the ground pork and beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon, about 10 minutes.
- Stir in the thyme, sage, cinnamon, allspice, salt, and pepper. Cook for a couple of minutes until the spices are fragrant.
- Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, bringing the mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes or until slightly thickened.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Place one of the pie crusts into a pie dish and fill it with the meat mixture, smoothing the top.
- Cover with the second pie crust, sealing the edges. Cut slits in the top to allow steam to escape. Brush the top with a beaten egg for a nice golden finish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
- Allow it to cool slightly before slicing and serving.
