Backstory: Inspired by the street vendors of Philadelphia, this recipe combines classic cheesesteak flavors with the added depth of mushrooms. The result is a rich, satisfying dish perfect for your keto lifestyle.
Nutritional Insights: Skirt steak is an excellent source of protein rich in iron, while mushrooms add nutrients and fiber. This recipe maintains a well-rounded nutritional profile that aligns with keto principles.
Ingredients:
- 1 lb skirt steak, thinly sliced against the grain
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 1 bell pepper (red or green), sliced
- 8 oz cremini or portobello mushrooms, sliced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust for spice level)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 oz provolone cheese, sliced (or any keto-friendly cheese of your choice)
- 1 head of romaine or butter lettuce, leaves separated for wraps
- Optional toppings: sliced jalapeños, avocado, or hot sauce
Cooking Instructions:
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onion and bell pepper, and sauté until they start to soften, about 5 minutes.
- Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet and continue cooking until they are golden brown and tender, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add minced garlic and red pepper flakes to the skillet. Sauté for an additional minute until fragrant.
- Push the vegetables to one side of the skillet and add the sliced skirt steak to the empty side. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for about 3-4 minutes, stirring until the steak is browned and cooked to your desired doneness.
- Once the steak is cooked, mix the vegetables back in with the steak. Layer slices of provolone cheese over the top, cover, and reduce the heat to low. Allow the cheese to melt for about 2-3 minutes.
- Meanwhile, prepare the lettuce leaves. Rinse them under cold water and pat dry with a paper towel.
- Using a spatula, scoop the cheesesteak mixture onto a lettuce leaf, folding it like a wrap. Add any optional toppings as desired.
- Serve immediately, garnished with extra red pepper flakes or hot sauce for added spice.
Flavor Profile: This dish captures the classic savory, meaty notes of a traditional cheesesteak, enhanced by the earthy umami of the mushrooms. The melted provolone adds richness, while the spice from the red pepper provides warmth that elevates the overall flavor.
Keto-Friendly Explanation: This recipe remains low in carbohydrates while being high in healthy fats and protein. Mushrooms offer additional nutrients without adding significant carbs, making this dish both satisfying and compliant with keto guidelines.
