These delightful meatballs are tender and flavorful, typically served with a rich gravy, mashed potatoes, and lingonberry sauce. A true taste of Norway!
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef (or a mixture of beef and pork)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 onion (finely chopped)
- 1-2 cloves minced garlic (optional)
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon ground allspice
- Salt and pepper (to taste)
- 2 tablespoons butter (for frying)
For the Gravy
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth (or chicken broth)
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- Salt and pepper (to taste)
Cooking Instructions
- Prepare the Mixture: In a bowl, soak the breadcrumbs in milk for about 5 minutes. Add the ground meat, finely chopped onion, minced garlic (if using), egg, nutmeg, allspice, salt, and pepper. Mix well until fully combined.
- Shape the Meatballs: Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter. Set them aside on a plate.
- Cook the Meatballs: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, cooking until browned on all sides and cooked through, about 10-12 minutes. Remove the cooked meatballs and set aside.
- Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute until it turns golden. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and continue to stir until the mixture thickens.
- Add Cream: Stir in the heavy cream, season with salt and pepper. Let it simmer for a few minutes until it’s rich and creamy.
- Combine Meatballs and Gravy: Add the cooked meatballs back into the skillet, coating them with the gravy. Let them simmer for another few minutes.
- Serve: Serve the Norwegian meatballs hot, paired with mashed potatoes and a dollop of lingonberry sauce for a truly delightful meal!
