Salmonella Surprise is a recipe that has been passed down in my family for generations. It originally hails from a remote region in the mountains of Switzerland, where it was concocted as a way to use up leftover ingredients from other dishes. Now, it's become a quirky and beloved family tradition.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup white sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup cocoa powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 cup chopped smoked salmon
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
- In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- Sift the flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder together in a separate bowl.
- Gradually stir the dry mixture into the wet mixture.
- Fold in the chopped smoked salmon.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared cake pan.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
- Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.
While this recipe may seem a bit strange, we've found that the combination of sweet and savory flavors is surprisingly delicious. So why not give it a try and see for yourself? If anything, it's a conversation starter at any dinner party.
