Ingredients
- 500g beef, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 2 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 2 carrots, peeled and sliced
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 2 green chillies, slit
- 1-2 cloves of garlic (if available), minced
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon coriander seeds
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red pepper powder (adjust for your spice preference)
- 1-2 teaspoons red pepper flakes (optional for extra heat)
- 3-4 tablespoons cooking oil
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
- 1-2 cloves and a small piece of cinnamon stick
- 500ml milk (for a creamy touch, optional)
Cooking Instructions
- In a large pot, heat the cooking oil over medium heat. Add the cumin and coriander seeds, allowing them to sizzle for a minute until fragrant.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
- Stir in the minced garlic and followed by the chopped tomatoes, cooking until they soften and meld into the onion mixture.
- Introduce the beef pieces, browning them on all sides for about 5-7 minutes.
- Sprinkle in the turmeric, red pepper powders, black pepper, salt, cloves, and cinnamon. Stir well to coat the beef in spices.
- Add the cubed potatoes, sliced carrots, and green chillies, mixing everything thoroughly.
- Pour in enough water to cover the mixture (about 500ml), then bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and let it simmer for about 1 hour to allow flavors to develop and beef to tenderize, stirring occasionally.
- If desired, pour in the milk 10-15 minutes before the curry is done to create a richer sauce, stirring to blend.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary, adding more salt or spices as desired.
- Serve hot with bread or rice, and take pride in your impressive dish!
Flavor Profile
This curry is a beautiful harmony of flavors. The spices bring warmth and complexity, while the sweet notes from the caramelized onions and potatoes balance the heat. The optional milk adds creaminess that makes each bite comforting.
