Masala chai is a beloved Indian beverage that combines the robust flavors of black tea with a warming blend of spices. It's perfect for any time of the day!
Ingredients
- 2 cups water
- 2 tablespoons loose black tea or 2 tea bags
- 1 cup milk (dairy or your choice of non-dairy)
- 2 tablespoons sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1-2 slices fresh ginger (more if you like it spicy)
- 1-2 green cardamom pods, crushed
- 1 small cinnamon stick (or a pinch of ground cinnamon)
- 2-3 whole cloves (optional)
- A pinch of black pepper (optional)
Instructions
- In a saucepan, combine the water and freshly sliced ginger. Bring it to a boil over medium heat.
- Once boiling, add the crushed cardamom pods, cinnamon stick, cloves, and black pepper. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes to infuse the flavors.
- Add the loose black tea or tea bags to the boiling water. Allow it to boil for another 2-3 minutes, depending on how strong you like your tea.
- Pour in the milk and sugar. Stir well and let the mixture come to a gentle boil again.
- Once it starts to rise, remove it from heat and strain the tea into cups using a fine-mesh strainer to catch the spices.
