Classic Stovetop Mac and Cheese

Comfort food at its best - a classic, creamy and cheesy stovetop mac and cheese that's ready in no time!
Ingredients
- 12 oz elbow macaroni
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter
- 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp ground mustard
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions

Cook the macaroni according to package instructions in a large pot of salted boiling water.

While the macaroni is cooking, make the cheese sauce:

Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.

Add the flour and whisk until smooth.

Cook for 1-2 minutes, whisking constantly, until the mixture turns a light golden brown color and starts to smell nutty.

Gradually whisk in the milk, making sure to whisk out any lumps.

Cook, whisking constantly, until the sauce thickens and coats the back of a spoon, about 4-5 minutes.

Add the garlic powder, onion powder, ground mustard, salt, and pepper to the sauce.

Once the macaroni is cooked, drain it and return it to the large pot.

Add the cheese sauce to the pot with the macaroni and stir until the pasta is coated evenly.

Serve hot, garnished with additional cheese if desired.
