Ingredients:
- 1 pound elbow macaroni or any other pasta of your choice
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 4 cups whole milk
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional toppings: cooked bacon bits, breadcrumbs, chopped fresh herbs, or sliced scallions.
Instructions:
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the macaroni according to the package instructions until it is al dente, usually about 8-9 minutes. Drain the pasta and set it aside.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Once it has melted, add the flour and whisk until smooth.
- Slowly add the milk, whisking constantly to prevent any lumps from forming. Keep whisking as you bring the mixture to a boil.

- Season the sauce to taste with salt and pepper.
- Add the cooked macaroni to the saucepan and stir until the macaroni is coated with the cheese sauce.
- Serve your mac and cheese hot, topped with any additional toppings you desire.
