This easy marinara sauce bursts with fresh flavors and is perfect for slathering on your pizza, pasta, or using as a dipping sauce!
Ingredients:
- 1 can (28 ounces) whole peeled tomatoes (or crushed tomatoes)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil (or a few fresh basil leaves, chopped)
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a spicy kick)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, to cut acidity)
Instructions:
-
In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until soft and translucent (about 5 minutes).
-
Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds, being careful not to let it burn.
-
Pour in the canned tomatoes (with juices). If you’re using whole tomatoes, break them up using a spoon.
-
Stir in the dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, pepper, and sugar (if desired).
-
Let the sauce simmer on low heat for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce should thicken and flavors meld beautifully.
-
Once finished, use an immersion blender for a smoother consistency if desired. Otherwise, leave it as is for a chunkier sauce.
-
Let the sauce cool slightly before spreading it on your pizza crust!
Flavor Profile: This homemade marinara sauce is rich and savory with a perfect balance of sweetness from the tomatoes and aromatic notes from the garlic and herbs. It’s a delightful base that enhances the flavors of the ground lamb and other toppings on your pizza!
