Flavor Profile: Soft and pillowy, with a subtle tanginess and a hint of char from grilling.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup plant-based yogurt (e.g., almond or soy yogurt)
- 2 tablespoons melted vegan butter (or vegetable oil) for brushing
- Optional toppings: chopped garlic, chopped cilantro
Instructions:
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until the yeast becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt.
- Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the yeast mixture and plant-based yogurt.
- Mix the ingredients together until it forms a rough dough.
- Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours until it has doubled in size.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air and divide it into smaller portions.
- Roll each portion into an oval or round shape, about 1/4 inch thick.
- Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
- Place one rolled naan on the hot skillet and cook for about 1-2 minutes until air pockets start to form and the bottom is golden brown. Flip and cook the other side for an additional 1-2 minutes.
- Remove the naan from the skillet and brush it with melted vegan butter or vegetable oil. If desired, sprinkle chopped garlic or cilantro on top.
- Repeat the process with the remaining naans.
- Serve the naan bread warm with your favorite curries or dips.
Enjoy your homemade naan bread!
